LeBron James 经纪人 Rich Paul 发布的最新声明中表示 LeBron 换球衣背号的举动出自于对已逝传奇球星 Bill Russell 的尊重。去年八月，NBA 宣布全联盟退役 6 号球衣向 Bill Russell 致敬，现役的 6 号球员则不受影响，而 LeBron 选择于下个赛季换回个人熟悉的球衣背号「23」以示个人对于 Bill 的尊重。顺带一提，Bill Russell 是 NBA 首位得到球衣全联盟共同退役殊荣的球员。
LeBron James 加入湖人首季的球衣背号为「23」，隔年原计划将把背号「23」让给 Anthony Davis，但因商业问题最后作罢，后者改为穿上背号「3」，LeBron 直到 2021 年才换回美国队与 Miami Heat 时期的背号「6」。
